Museo del Calendario

A fascinating tribute to documentations of the passage of time and the graphic arts that made it a little easier.

Museo del Calendario

The Calendar Museum (MUCAL) is a remarkable little museum in the historic center of Querétaro. Dedicated, in principle to giant over-sized calendars from the early 20th century, it\'s ended up being something of a tribute to bygone graphic representations of the passage of time - from all eras - and especially to how those representations are adorned.

The museum occupies a truly impressive 17th-century mansion. It was painstakingly restored, and surrounds multiple patios and gardens. The museum is as much a cool retreat from the busy center of the city as it is a place for reflecting on time, the movies, graphic arts and even older representations of time and the cosmos.

The giant Aztec sun stone is, of course, both an emblem of the history of Mexico, but also a calendar. It\'s a good starting point for their, and thus our, visions of the cosmos. The museum collection includes works of Jesus Helguera, Santiago Sadurni, Ángel Martín Merino, and other painters and illustrators. Calendars from the 19th century illuminate an entirely different understanding of the era.

Opened in 1987, the space documents the evolution of time measurement, and celebrates a rich homespun Mexican tradition. Today, it\'s a tribute to the past, and a vital part of the present. With an on-site cafe, the MUCAL makes a fascinating trip into history, or simply a charming place to relax and escape the city.
