Laguna la María

Laguna La María sits in the crater of an ancient volcanic caldera in La Becerrera, Comala, Colima, at around 1,800 m above sea level. Fed by cold springs, its 1.5 km-wide, \~30 m-deep waters remain crystal clear year-round. Towering crater walls and lush pine-coffee forests create a breathtaking natural amphitheater.

This is an ecotourism paradise: camp, stay in stone cabins, paddle a kayak or boat, fish for tilapia, carp, and bass, hike coffee-lined trails, and explore centuries-old tunnels carved into the crater rim. Birdwatchers will delight—Laguna La María is a hotspot for endemic regional species.

Just under 10 km from the active Volcán de Fuego, visitors may witness spectacular lava-and-ash fireworks at dusk—an awe-inspiring show that poses no direct threat thanks to intervening canyons. Guided walks to hidden volcanic caves add a sense of mystery.

Perfect for family outings, nature immersion, or mystical retreats, Laguna La María is entwined with the local legend of María—whose restless spirit is said to dwell beneath the lake—adding cultural depth to the scenic wonder.
