The Xcanché cenote is some three kilometers from the town of Ek Balam and a few steps from the archaeological site of the same name and all in the middle of the jungle. A remarkablesemi-open cenote, it is accessible from the entrance of the bus stop area via a 1.5 kilometer trail. This gets covered on foot or by renting a bicycles or tricycles for two passengers.
The cenote has a water surface of approximately 40m in diameter. Visitors can relax with a refreshing swim or take off for rappelling and zip-lining nearby. On one side, the parador has a palapa with hammocks for rest and relaxation and there is a restaurant with traditional cooks. The experience is ideally complemented by a visit to the nearbyt archaeological site of Ek Balam and the majestic pyramid, Acropolis and ancient ceremonial buildings, a ball game court and the surrounding wall.
In 2002, residents of the local land trust conducted an exploration in the Maya jungle of the Hunukú plot. They found the ancient cenote called X-Canché, and organized themselves as a cooperative. They also trained in customer service, first aid, adventure activities, and resources management to provide for the facilities and the access road. Since then, they have developed the area into a solid destination and a first-rate example of sustainable cenotes management for the entire region. The site is some 1.5 kilometers from the ancient kingdom of Talol, and the walled Maya city of Ek Balam.
