Aktun Usil Caves
The AktĂșn Usil caves are a hidden treasure just outside of the little town of MaxcanĂș in western YucatĂĄn. The name, AktĂșn Usil, in the Mayan language means "place to see the blowing of paint." The site, of incomparable beauty and mysticism, is known for a cavern more than 60 meters high inside. On the ceiling are astounding painted Maya hieroglyphs. Â
The caves were only recently discovered, and their long obscurity preserved, intact, ceremonial altars, ancient vessels, human remains, and artifacts that open a window onto the sacred past of the Maya people. Traveling back in time, visitors can feel the echo of ancestral ceremonies and contemplate the art, science and culture that continues to inhabit the spirit of the place.
Visiting AktĂșn Usil requires a certified local guide. You will be accompanied by an expert in nature, history and the deep Maya culture of the area. The guides are dedicated to orienting visitors, but also to sharing stories, legends, and the knowledge passed down from generation to generation so that your visit is enriched with a deep and authentic cultural dimension.
Guides should be contacted through the means below, but people arrive to the caves via the Tren Maya at the MaxcanĂș station. The trip from MĂ©rida is just about 30 minutes on the train although several bus lines and tour groups from MĂ©rida will cover the same route.Â
