Ek Balam Community Immersion
The community of Ek Balam regularly welcomes visitors for a unique experience to get a closer look at the rich culture of the Maya people through active participation in the traditional activities that form part of the daily life of the inhabitants. Upon arrival, you will be welcomed at the Unajil Ek Balam Hotel. The name Ek Balam means "House of the Black Jaguar " and is the front door to the community.
From here, you will explore the village streets on foot, taking in the tranquility of the village, the vernacular architecture, and the warmth of the villagers. The goal of the experience is to visit three homes where practical workshops pass on ancestral knowledge.
A weaving workshop gives you a close-up look at the processes involved in the making of hammocks. The basic techniques let you can weave one yourself.
The Tortilla Workshop walks you through the process of nixtamalización through to the finished tortilla.
Finally an embroidery workshop lets participants learn embroidery techniques and master the use of needle and thread to produce a souvenir handkerchief. The workshop not only teaches an artisan technique, but lets you appreciate the work, detail and creativity of every local embroiderer.
In addition to the workshop, visitors get insight into the living environment of traditional homes, backyards, and neighborhoods so that you take part in the daily life of the community in a respectful and enriching way.
