Laguna Nahá
The Laguna Nahá is high in the mountains of the vivid jungle Lacandon, and right near the little village of Nahá-Metzabok on the eastern edge of Chiapas. The Nahá Jungle Lodge is a magnificent country escape run by local people and open to people from all over the world. The community is nearly entirely invested in welcoming guests, sharing with them the secrets and revelations of the jungle, and providing safe passage in and between the trees, valleys, and mountains.
The Nahá Lake, a few minutes walk outside the village, provides an open space and plenty of room to canoe. The surrounding area is some of the best hiking area anywhere on earth. Guests get guided walks through the primary jungle. You can learn about 100-year-old trees, medicinal plants and many birds that live only here. The Nahá Lake and the nearby Laguna Amarilla are part of the bigger Metzabok Wildlife Protected Area.
Community-based tourism here is not a just concept, it is the living reality of the 21 families of Nahá. They transformed their own way of inhabiting the territory so it is sustainable and sets an example all around the world. They capture rainwater, treat wastewater, rely on solar energy and train continuously to improve the offer made to visitors. This way, the outstanding natural environment and visitors come back to do it again.
Guests can practice archery, go owl watching, take in the work of local painter, Kayum Maax, or spend time by either lake. Hiking the Hoch Há is said to be the most challenging and rewarding trail in the area.
Getting to the Nahá Jungle Lodge from Palenque is part of the adventure. In Palenque, a bus marked Pajchiltic leaves from the Aexa bus station. By car, you should be aware that some roads are unpaved or in disrepair. The trip generally takes just under three hours.
