​It is the only element left standing from the first church of Sinaloa de Leyva, built by the Jesuits in 1635. In 1770, the Río Sinaloa overflowed, completely flooding the town and leaving destruction in its wake. The Jesuit church was reduced to rubble, with only this ancient tower being saved.
