Feria de San Jacinto de Polonia

For three days, Ocosingo fills with color, music, and fervor to pay tribute to Saint Hyacinth of Poland, a saint of European origin who has been embraced by generations as the community’s spiritual protector. The celebration begins with solemn masses and religious processions, during which worshippers walk through the main streets carrying images of the saint, prayers, and devotional songs. Traditional neighborhoods decorate their facades with papel picado (cut paper decorations), flowers, and lights, creating a festive atmosphere full of symbolism and faith.

The figure of Saint Hyacinth holds a special place in the hearts of the people of Ocosingo, who, over the years, have woven a series of religious and community practices around this devotion, shaping a living tradition. The liturgical activities are led by the local parish and involve children, youth, and adults in readings, songs, and biblical dramatizations.

Alongside the religious component, the fair offers a wide range of cultural and popular expressions. In the Central Park, stages are set up for performances of traditional music, marimba, folk dances, and community groups. There are also exhibitions of artisanal products, typical food stalls, amusement rides, and fun activities for the whole family. Among the most anticipated moments are performances by local and regional artists, as well as the crowning of the fair queen—a young woman chosen for her charisma, commitment, and representation of Ocosingo’s cultural values.

The fair serves as a gathering point for rural communities, communal lands (ejidos), and neighborhoods, who come not only to venerate the saint but to socialize, exchange knowledge, and celebrate community life. Additionally, educational institutions and cultural centers prepare artistic performances and exhibitions related to the history of Saint Hyacinth and the evolution of the festival in the municipality. Activities such as a footrace in honor of the saint, children’s drawing contests, and traditional art workshops are also promoted.

The Saint Hyacinth of Poland Fair is, in essence, a manifestation of Ocosingo’s religious and festive spirit. It is an opportunity to give thanks, share, and reaffirm community bonds. Each year, this celebration grows stronger as a space for cultural expression, intergenerational connection, and the reaffirmation of the collective identity of a people who honor their past with joy, respect, and unity.
