The Sumidero Canyon is a deep gorge extending along the Grijalva River in Chiapas. The place is one of great natural beauty and great biodiversity. At some 30 kilometers in length, some of the cliff faces reach 1,000 meters into the sky. The canyon is part of the Sumidero Canyon National Park, a protected area that is home to a vast diversity of flora and fauna.
A famous rock formation reminiscent of a Christmas tree is one prominent landmark, but lots of visitors come for the wildlife watching in the national park. It\\\'s one of Mexico\\\'s most beautiful natural landscapes.
Must-do list:
Boat ride: on the Grijalva River. Tours take you through the impressive rock formations and crocodiles, howler monkeys, all kinds of birds and, more rarely, jaguars or pumas have been spotted from the boats. Tours take about two hours and local experts can give you information about the geography, history, and wildlife in the area.
Hiking: The canyon is best approached through the several routes that let you reach viewpoints of the canyon from multiple angles. Some of the most popular trails take you to the Mirador de la Cruz, with spectacular panoramic views. Mirador de los Chiapanecos is another a perfect spot to take pictures.
Lookouts and Rock Formations: From the boats or the hiking trails, rock formations, like the Cueva de los Murcielagos (Bat Cave) and the Christmas Tree are iconic and are often the most photographed spots in the canyon.
