Colima Birding: Birdwatching Experience


Experience one of Mexico’s most fascinating natural spectacles. Observe, learn, and photograph over 470 bird species, including 46 endemic species, in an environment filled with life, color, and unique sounds.

From December 3 to 5, 2025, enjoy a complete experience featuring workshops, conferences, forums, and panels at the Centro Cultural de Salagua in Manzanillo.
Then, on December 6 and 7, embark on one of the five birdwatching routes specially designed for you, taking you through the most emblematic landscapes of Colima, Comala, Minatitlán, Ixtlahuacán, and Manzanillo.


Birds of the Volcano – Comala

Route: Laguna La María and La Yerbabuena
Schedule: 6:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
Habitat: Riparian and cloud forests with grassland areas.
Distance: 3 to 4 km
Highlight species: Pale-billed Chachalaca, Mexican Woodpecker, Elegant Trogon, Sinaloa Wren, and many more.

Cost: $750 MXN per person.


Flights of the Coast – Potrero Grande and Marshlands

Schedule:
• Departure from Manzanillo: 7:30 a.m. / Return: 1:30 p.m.
• Departure from Colima: 5:30 a.m. / Return: 3:30 p.m.
Distance: 2 to 3 km
Highlight species: Northern Jacana, White Ibis, Mexican Cacique, Herons, Terns, and more.

Cost: $750 MXN (from Colima) / $500 MXN (from Manzanillo).


Birds of El Terrero – Minatitlán

Route: El Terrero
Schedule: 6:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Habitat: Temperate forest.
Distance: 3 to 4 km
Highlight species: White-eared Hummingbird, Red-headed Tanager, Mexican Trogon, Red Crossbill, among others.

Cost: $750 MXN per person.


Caves of the Birds – San Gabriel, Ixtlahuacán

Schedule: 6:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (from Colima or Manzanillo)
Habitat: Dry tropical forest with a lagoon.
Distance: 3 to 4 km
Highlight species: Colima Pygmy Owl, Northern Cardinal, Mexican Tiger Heron, Green Kingfisher, and many others.

Cost: $750 MXN per person.


Colors of the Pacific – Grand Isla Navidad Resort, Manzanillo

Schedule:
• Departure from Manzanillo: 6:00 a.m. / Return: 2:30 p.m.
• Departure from Colima: 4:30 a.m. / Return: 4:00 p.m.
Habitat: Mangroves, tropical dry forest, grasslands, natural and artificial lakes, and coastal ecosystems.
Distance: 3 km walking + 9 km safari.
Highlight species: Citron-throated Trogon, Colima Pygmy Owl, Lesser Black Hawk, Belted Kingfisher, and over 180 possible species to observe.

Cost: $750 MXN per person + $200 MXN for breakfast.
