Monarch Butterfly Sanctuaries

Monarch Butterfly Sanctuaries

Each year, between November and March, the forests of Sierra Chincua, El Rosario, and Senguio become the setting for one of the most impressive natural spectacles in the world. Thousands of Monarch Butterflies arrive in these mountains, covering the trees with their vibrant orange color and filling the air with a gentle fluttering that feels like something out of a dream.

The annual migration of the Monarch Butterfly, from the north of the continent to the forests of Mexico, is a unique natural phenomenon in the world. This species, widely distributed throughout the Americas, is known for undertaking an epic journey to the Mexican forests, covering a distance of up to 5,000 kilometers.

Measuring between 9 and 10 centimeters, Monarch Butterflies show subtle differences between males and females: males are slightly larger and have a distinctive black spot on their wings, while females are characterized by more pronounced black markings. At the genetic level, monarch butterflies have 16,866 pairs of genes, some of which give them the ability to fly long distances with less fatigue and require less oxygen—an essential adaptation for their migration.

Visiting these sanctuaries is not only an opportunity to admire this natural wonder up close, but also to reconnect with nature and support the conservation of this emblematic species.

Come and witness an extraordinary journey that fills the forests of MichoacĂĄn with life every year!
