Temporada de Micoturismo 2026

During the rainy season, between July and September, the forests of the Estado de México await you, offering opportunities to observe, identify, collect, and in some cases, taste edible wild mushrooms—an activity also known as mycotourism.

This activity, which connects you with nature and the ancestral knowledge of local communities, can be enjoyed in destinations such as Amanalco, Amecameca, Ayapango, Ixtapaluca, Jilotzingo, Jiquipilco, Ocuilan, and Ocoyoacac, among others.

Those with expertise in mycotourism use the term "hongosto," a colloquial term in Mexico that refers to August, the peak month for mushroom growth due to the rainy season and high humidity.

It is important to book and follow this tour with local tour operators and guides, as they possess the knowledge and experience necessary for this activity. Among the tools they carry on the tours are a basket and a small knife. In some cases, instead of a basket, they use a bucket with holes drilled in it to allow the mushrooms to breathe after they've been cut.

Around 140 species of mushrooms can be admired during the tour, of which only 40 are edible.
