Díaz de Cossio Experimental Ceramics Workshop

The Díaz de Cossio Experimental Ceramics Workshop (Taller Experimental de Cerámica Díaz de Cossio) in Mexico City is a unique outdoor ceramic school and shop in the Center of Coyoacán. It operates as a school, factory, and something of a factory-outlet. The workshop regularly produces some 600+ ceramic works from their main product line.

They boast a terrific list of regular customers from high-end retailers, to boutiques, hotels and restaurants. The sale of all of these items allows them to not just offer courses and workshops, but also to experiment wildly.The workshop began in the Colonia Roma in the 1960s well before Roma was a center for design all on its own. Alberto Díaz de Cossío was managing a family-run coffee export company. His taste for ceramics led him to set up a small ceramics workshop in his apartment there.

By 1964, Díaz de Cossío had moved to Coyoacán and began work on a high temperature kiln. He moved to the present site in 1967 and became one of the first workshops producing Japanese-style high-temperature ceramics in the country.Fifty years later, the the workshop develops and produces utilitarian and artistic works and offers space for students and fans of the the ceramic arts. Courses include sculpture, turning, experimental techniques, and use of the furnaces and kilns.

The workshop is a regular vendor at the Saturday market at the Plaza San Jacinto in San Ángel. But true believers say a visit on the grounds themselves is always worth the trip.

Hours: Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
