Camp Yaaxche
Calakmul, given the right circumstances, is one of the most rewarding and meaningful of the ancient Maya cities, and we've got just your spot in the deepest jungle.
Camp Yaaxche offers an incredible place to stay just outside of Calakmul in the very heart of the Campeche jungle. One of the most iconic of the cities of the ancient world of the Maya, this is one of the best ways get close enough to stay and really learn the history, architecture, and the deep sensibility of the forest and its people.
Yaaxche offers guided trips to the key places from which the Maya made astronomical observations. There's also a tall tower to really get an understanding of the lay of the land. The connection between heaven and earth starts to makes every more sense with knowledge of their architecture and astronomy. Afternoons can include food workshops to make your own lunch, and an exploration of the symbolism of fire and its link to legends of the first Maya people. Handmade tortillas are cooked over a wood fire and the rest of lunch can be had with help from the onsite restaurant.
When night falls, head to a clear spot in the heart of the forest to observe the starry sky. Guests at the campsite can enjoy tamales and chocolate and learn about their significance to the Maya of the ancient world, and those of today. Tours and workshops can also be customized so that you get exactly what you were looking for yourself and your kids.
The campsite is only a few minutes to the south of the Calakmul station on the Tren Maya, and transport from there is easy. The protected archaeological zone is a bit further south from the campsite but services after the campsite are few and far between. The camp will arrange with local transport providers to get you exactly where you're hoping to be.
