Flamencos de Isla Arena

Campeche

Flamingos of Isla Arena

Among the most natural and inviting ways to visit the flamingo-friendly mangroves along the sunny coast of Campeche.

Flamingos of Isla Arena

The Flamingos of Isla Arena have always been one of the principle draws to the broader Isla Arena, and this very sunny and natural northern corner of Campeche. Servicios EcoturĂsticos Carey offer fantastic canoe trips through the channels and mangrove tunnels directly into the famous (and giant) RĂa CelestĂșn Biosphere Reserve that extends well north of Isla Arenas into the neighboring state of Yucatan.

Visitors get a eye-smacking first hand experience of the pink flamingos and other coastal birds in their natural habitat. Tours include a visit to the sites of the ongoing reforestation of the mangroves. And some tours can include trips to the old haciendas, Real de Salinas and Hacienda Herradura and the surrounding salt ponds. This area is also frequented by dolphins, and lots of other aquatic life in addition to the flamingos.

Tours are for up to six persons and generally last about three hours. Servicios EcoturĂsticos Carey is a cooperative dedicated to wetland conservation and mangrove reforestation. Tours are designed to avoid the over-exploitation of marine species, and to provide authentic ecotourism tours as an alternative to over-fishing along this stretch of very important coast.

Tours can also include a trip to the swimming hole, a sheltered space within the mangrove system. But there is also a swimming pool within the Carey Cabañas complex where the boats dock. It's a fascinating and comfortable place to stay. The cooperative today offers oceanfront cabins and accommodation, a restaurant serving local seafood, boat and canoe rentals, fishing tours, and bird watching tours. Over the course of their history, the cooperative has been involved with cleanup campaigns, canal dredging, and mangrove reforestation. They also work with local children and young people to trained them in bird conservation and identification.

Most guests will arrive via the Dzitbalché tourism corridor that also includes Nunkiní, Santa Cruz, Tankuché, and El Remate. The Isla Arena is usually considered the end of the corridor that begins at the Tren Maya station in Calkiní. It's a fantastic trip.
