El Hormiguero Hiking and Biking Tours
One of the most theatrical of the exotic lost Maya cities is made all the more dramatic when you get there through the jungle, as the shimmering light of morning reaches a crescendo of bird call and stunning realization.
Echeverria Castelot is a tiny little town to the south of Xpujil deep in the southeast of Campeche. The town is east, about eight kms, from the celebrated ruins at El Hormiguero. The tiny community is almost entirely dedicated to vacationers who come to explore the jungles between here and there.
Visits can be based in the Centro Ecoturístico El Hormiguero within the village where they rent entirely respectable cabins. Or a lot of visitors, determined to rough it, will rent a smaller campsite, with or without a tent and just a little further afield. A regional breakfast can also be had at the center.
The eco-touristic center then lets visitors choose between morning and afternoon trips to the archaeological site to the west through the enticing jungle. Guides will take you on foot or by bicycle. Bike rentals include helmets, and they will provide vehicular transport for people who can't hike or bike.
There's a stop at the enchanted lagoon. And there's time to witness the wildlife, the plant life, and many of the intricacies of the biosphere. Afternoon tours will begin at the Hormiguero site and continue back along the trail, again on foot or bicycle, until you reach the lagoon.
Afterwards, dinner is served at the centro again, and those who will stay the night will settle into either cabins or the campsite. It's a fantastic place to stay, and the ruins make even greater sense in the waning light of afternoon, or the breaking light of morning.
From the Chetumal airport to the Xpujil station it takes just under two hours on the Tren Maya. From Escarcega, the same trip takes about two hours and 20 minutes. The Ecoturístico Hormiguero will send a car to the Tren Maya at Xpujil to accompany guests to the center. The entire drive takes about 25 minutes.
