Las Coloradas

Some of the most fantastic multi-colored pools of seawater on the Caribbean, a stay along the white sand beaches here will leave you dreaming no more and happy at last to have arrived.

Las Coloradas

Las Coloradas is a fantastic landscape of salt extraction pools (sounds iccky) that wow the eye and all the senses with fantastic colors and an absolutely otherworldly landscape (and seascape) that you will never forget. It's a protected natural area around a little fishing port and village, and so easy to get to, it's a wonder it's not packed with thousands.

In fact, except on some weekends, you'll very likely have the place practically to yourself. The characteristic pink of the water is going to vary in intensity depending on when you get there and how long you stay. Access to the water is restricted as it's not really safe to go in. The town and the pools thus bear a reputation for a somewhat surreal and fantastic experience, on the edge of the sea. For the adventurous, or those set on a true beach adventure, this one is a very good option. Of course, the beaches themselves are pristine, inviting, and only ever dream about. At least for more most people.

But Las Coloradas is also a little beach town. It's not merely populated with people so bedazzled by the colors but it's a healthy community of people devoted to the environment, to their own town and to life on land and off shore. It's a magnificent place to spend a few days or even a couple of weeks. It's loaded with places to stay, windswept, and far from over-developed. There is seafood, and lots of other things to eat, but in truth, it's rather far from a supermarket.

The town and the pools thus bear a reputation for a somewhat surreal and fantastic experience, on the edge of the sea. For many travelers, it's just what the doctor ordered.

Tizimin is the nearest settlement that is bigger than a few houses and it's a whole hour to the south. A good place to stock up on supplies, it's a nice place to visit, too. The ruins at Ek Balam are not far from there. Most visitors are going to arrive via the Tren Maya station at Valladolid. This is usually about an hour and 45 minutes drive to the south. It's also a very nice place to visit.
