Homún

One of the true best stops for cenote aficionados, the surrounding countryside is sunken in at more than 300 sites, many of them as open to the public as they are to the underworld.

Homún

Homún is a small town of some 62,000 people about an hour southeast of Mérida among the green rolling pastures and jungle ofYucatan. The town is likely most famous for the many cenotes in the area and these are perfect for swimming, exploring, and dropping down into the Maya underworld. In fact, for the people of Yucatan, Homún is practically synonymous with the landscape that gives way to its many sunken treasures and people visit especially for a chance to take a dip, relax, and enjoy. There are more than 300 in the entire municipality.

The ambitious and popular Yucatan Cenotes Route features the town in a big way. The cenote of Santa Bárbara is made up of three of the dreamy sink holes. But just within the town are Tza Ujun Kat, Yaxbacaltún, Canunchen, Balmil, Cheel Peba, and Pool Uinic. Each can be visited ll surrounded by lush vegetation and an atmosphere of incomparable peace.

But the town of Homún is set around the temple of San Buenaventura. Equally old and austere, that of Santiago Apóstol graces the skyline in the neighboring town of Cuzaman. But both little towns are lush and green and alive with things to do. Tour guides will whisk you off to the Polabán hacienda and to the archaeological sites of Kampepen on the east side of town, and those a little further at Sión, and Yalabau.

The feast of San Buenaventura is celebrated every July 6th to 14th with music, food, and music and dancing in the streets and the town square. But the Tza Ujun Kat Artists Market makes it feel like festival all year round. It's on the west side of town on the way to Cuzaman.

Most visitors will arrive to Homún via Mérida. The state capital is only about an hour away, and shuttle vans make the trip easy. The Mérida Teya station is even closer, and it's likely the best stop for passengers disembarking after trips from other parts of the Peninsula.
