Santuario de Meliponas

The Mielera Familia Pat is the Pat Family honey center and bee farm. It's on the very west side of Tankuché, a little town not quite an hour to the west of Calkini.

People visit to take in the sensory and cultural experience of cultivating sacred honey in the very north of sun-kissed Campeche. The connection with nature and the Maya roots here is palpabale as in few other places. A visit begins with a tour of the surrounding flower gardens,. The natural surroundings and the diversity of plant, cactus, flowers, vines and more are all part of the necessary environment for the Melipona beecheii, that is, the stingless Maya bees cultivated here since ancient times.

The meliponary itself is a space dedicated to the conservation of multiple strains of the melipona bees. Members of the family are more than happy to fill you in on the importance of the bees to culture of the Maya people and the essential role they play in the natural environment. This is followed by a ritual giving thanks for the harvests and returning respect to the natural. Most visits will culminate with a tasting and sampling of the diverse range of honeys that result from the beekeeping.

The Mierlera is an important part of the Parador Turistico in the little town. That's where information for visitors is centralized, and you can learn about where to stay, visits to the ruins of the old and famous hacienda, and other things to do in the surrounding countryside.

People will stop in Tankuché on their way to the coast, especially to Isla Arena. It's about 45 minutes past Tankuché. But most guests will arrive today from the Tren Maya station at Calkini. It's just a bit short of an hour to the east.
