Salto Grande
The most famous and beautiful photos of all of Candelaria were likely taken in one natural spa setting just west of the center of the town, but still in the heart of everything.
Salto Grande is a natural wetland and swimming area some 20 minutes to the west of Candelaria in Campeche. One of the most visited natural attractions in the area, it's a relatively tame section of the river in absolutely spectacular surroundings. After strolling the waterfront within town, it seems just natural to want to get even a little closer. The riverfront here is surrounded by an ecological park, and much of the area's limited development has concentrated on the central areas leaving most of the surrounding jungle intact.
Area vendors and tour guides have had to adapt to the environmental sustainability regulations now protecting the area and local authorities work with the community to conserve the area's considerable natural advantages. People come to stroll the trails through the various parts of the jungle, and a few wooden bridges allow visitors to cross the river at select points. The ecopark is technically an "urban park" for the Candelaria community, but the name is about the only thing urban here.
As with much of the river, it's a place of tremendous wildlife. Howler monkeys and all kinds of birds are particularly abundant, even in the most visited areas. The broad areas where kayaking and rafting are most frequently practiced serve as set pieces for much of the photography supporting the rest of the town. If you noticed the gorgeous surroundings of Candelaria, most likely the pictures were taken here.
The park also includes some services for visitors, especially food which is nearly always being prepared outside and near the entrance. The surrounding country, even on the short trip out of town, is lush and inviting.
People get to Candelaria aboard the Tren Maya. From the station, or the center of town, the trip is easily covered in a taxi or even a combi van.
