Cenote Pueblo Fantasma
A mysteriously abandoned Maya village left behind a secretive and mysterious entrance into the underworld, and the enchanted, luxuriant pool within.
The Cenote Pueblo Fantasma is literally the Ghost Town Cenote. According to legend, the site long provided home to a village of Maya people. For unknown reasons it was completely abandoned, but tales of unexplained noises, and even voices, are said to have haunted the area ever since. Today, it is still home to one of the most popular cenotes for swimming, exploring, and simply experiencing the Maya underworld. It's also one of the peninsula's most accessible and fun sunken treasures.
The cenote itself is accessible through a wooden staircase. Down below, a closed cave system comes into view and guests soon appreciate that it's a place of great majesty and serenity. The entire place is well lit, and perfect for an afternoon swim. Tours will let you visit the nearby waterfall, and a second equally impressive cenote where swimming is not permitted.
Above ground, there's a small eatery, green areas for resting and enjoying, and space for changing into and out of swimsuits. While those managing the site are able to accommodate all kinds of visitors, the site is dedicated to the sustainable maintenance of the surrounding jungle environment. During the week, it is usually much less crowded than during sometimes very busy weekends.
The site is just about 20 minutes to the north of the main little town of Chemax. But most guests are going to arrive to the Cenote Pueblo Fantasma via the Tren Maya stations at either Valladolid to the west or to the east at Nuevo X-Can (still in Quintana Roo). In truth, the site is just about exactly in between the two stations. Some guests will want to arrive from the Chichen Itza area, two stations to the west on the train, and there is often transport from there for the roughly 90 minute trip.
