Aldea Maya

The leading traditional Maya kitchen and eatery in fantastic Santa Elena, there's lot to see, smell, eat, and learning just makes it that much more worth doing.

Aldea Maya

The Aldea Maya Xa'anil Naj is one of the best-known places in the little town of Santa Elena in Yucatan. Already popular Yucatecan cuisine comes to life beneath the steady hand - and often above an open flame - of the local women who run the kitchen something like a community center. Pibil chicken is so named because it is baked in the pib, that is, the underground oven. Tortillas are handmade, and the sikil pak made with pumpkin seeds, is easy to make, and good for you.

Reservations are a must. But the Aldea Maya has quickly shown their talent for attracting and keeping guests, with great food and friendly instruction. The Aldea is competing with the Mummy Museum in town - and they're actually winning! (Don't worry, you can visit the Mummy Museum too.) Known too as the Casa de la comida antigua, that is, the Home of Traditional Cooking, the Aldea Maya is something of a blockbuster in placid Santa Elena.

People get there via Ticul, or direct from Merida. The closest Tren Maya station is likely that at Maxcanú, which is not quite an hour away. People very often end up in Santa Elena after a trip to the Uxmal site which is even closer. The cooking and eating of traditional food being a wonderful complement to learning about the ancient culture and the people who live its traditions even today.
