Zazil Tunich
Valladolid's main claim to Popul Vuh fame is a fantastic underground cave and subterranean pool system complete with everything you need to connect with the Maya past.
Zazil Tunich is one of the most celebrated cenotes in the Valladolid area. A tour will include the 200-meter main corridor of the cave system, a full 20 meters below the surface of the earth. Stalactite and stalagmite formations serve as natural guides to lead you into the depths of Xibalba, the mythical Maya underworld. Guests pass through the symbolic Mayan Kiss, a narrow path formed by giant leaning stalagmite. This is followed by a passage through the cave of the alux, a mythical guardian of the caves.
But most importantly, the trip culminates upon your arrival at the cenote, a subterranean pool of sacred water. It's a space of contemplation and re-connection illuminated to best show off the caverns remarkable interior. The tour is not just a walk among impressive geological formations, but one that includes mysticism, tranquility, and wonder at nature's hidden subterranean creations.
The surrounding park includes five bungalow-style cabins, so overnight stays are encouraged. Other cenotes in the area also welcome guests, but nearly onsite at Zazil Tunich is a complete restaurant serving Yucatan specialities.
The Zazil Tunich park is on the Yalcobá-Xtut highway at Km 6, about 40 minutes driving northeast from Valladolid. Most guests will arrive from there,
