Parador Yaxunah
One of the most accessible and welcoming of Maya communities on the Peninsula, Yaxunah welcomes visitors from all over the world and offers a true look into Maya life, culture, and hospitality!
The Parador Yaxunah is a development for visitors to the little villlage of the same name in Yucatán. Some 30 minutes south of the Chichen Itza station on the Tren Maya, that's a little bit closer than the next station on the same line, that at Izamal. Most visitors will arrive from Chichen Itza.
People visit for the way that Yaxcabá has preserved its customs, beliefs, the Mayan language, traditional clothing, and the local architecture. Yaxcabá houses are built with wood and huanos, that is, the famous thatched roofs. Residents, women and men, are the descendants of the great Maya culture of ages gone by and today they share knowledge and their ways of life with visitors through the experience of community building, and sharing, and eating. The town offers a main tourist stop, i.e.; the Parador, where you can always meet up with the people offering comfortable cabins for lodging, a community museum where the history and traditions of the town are exhibited and explained. But there's also a botanical garden, a hammock-making workshop, and artisan works made, especially, from cow horns in addition to other locally available materials. The Parador is just a first stop and a central place to learn about everything on offer.
The community also maintains a seed bank, a symbol of the town's commitment to biodiversity, conservation, and food sovereignty. During a tour, visitors also get a chance to explore the archaeological site, a vestige of the Maya past that colors every experience here. From the ruins, you can walk the famous Maya trail, a path of startling history, nature, and spirituality that connects the past with the present.
After the hike, guests get a chance to cool off in the Lol-Há cenote. Central to life in the little village, it's a crystal-clear spring of startling quality and beauty. To round off a cultural visit to the village experience in style, visitors can also enjoy traditional foods as prepared by local cooks who remain experts in the recipes and flavors passed down from previous generations. Not just a destination, Yaxunah is a direct encounter with the soul of the people of Yucatán. It's a responsible and community-based experience with a variety of activities intended to provide the best in cultural and human value.
