Bike 9K through San Agustín in Yucatan

One of the most comprehensive and enriching activities you can do is a bike ride along a 9-kilometer trail that will take you through natural landscapes and community spaces full of life and meaning. Along the way, you will visit an apiary, where, accompanied by a local guide, you will learn about the importance of bees and their role in the ecosystem, as well as the natural resources, flora, and fauna of the region. This tour is not only an outdoor experience, but also an opportunity to connect with the natural environment and learn from those who live in harmony with it. Upon your return, you will be able to tour the community and observe some of the local economic activities that sustain the families in the area. These include charcoal production, wooden furniture manufacturing, hand-carved crafts, hammock weaving, and the cultivation of vegetables and medicinal plants, practices that reflect traditional knowledge and the sustainable use of resources.

To round off this experience, you will have the opportunity to explore an archaeological site located within the community. This site, surrounded by nature, will allow you to appreciate architectural elements and vestiges that tell part of the history of the Maya, their worldview, and way of life. As the final part of the experience, you can enjoy delicious Yucatecan dishes and snacks, prepared with fresh ingredients from local crops and with a special seasoning, served in the cooperative's restaurant.

And if you want to extend your visit, you will also have the option of spending a peaceful night under the moonlight, as the site offers accommodation in its camping area, ideal for relaxing and enjoying nature in a safe and welcoming environment. This tour is not just a tourist activity, it is a comprehensive learning experience, contact with nature, and interaction with a living community that generously and proudly opens its doors to share its culture, history, and way of life.

San Agustín is a tiny town deep in the south of Yucatan. People get here from Mérida, some 2.5 hours to the north. From the Hecelchakán station on the Tren Maya, the trip takes about three hours. But in truth, most travelers arrive to San Agustín by way of Tekax which is only about an hour to the north and is very well served by the major bus lines.
