The Museum of Contemporary Art and Oaxacan Cultures (MACCO), located on one of the most important and busiest streets in the Historic Center of the City—Macedonio Alcalá Street—was inaugurated in 1992. However, the history of this remarkable venue dates back to the colonial era. This old house was built in the late 17th and early 18th centuries by various families from the city, and since then it has been known as “La Casa de Cortés.”

Over the years, the property changed hands several times until 1986, when the State Government acquired it to establish the City Museum. Six years later, on February 28, 1992, an initiative was formed among artists, citizens, and authorities, which led to a new purpose for the building: the creation of the Museum of Contemporary Art and Oaxacan Cultures.

Although it has undergone some restorations over time, the building has been preserved. It features a Renaissance style, with a courtyard-house structure and a façade adorned with coats of arms. This architectural design contrasts with the museum’s aesthetic, which is focused on contemporary art. Nevertheless, it serves as a meeting point where regional traditions and new contemporary proposals are perfectly blended.
