Parish of Saint Mary of the Assumption
One of the most impressive temples in Puebla’s Sierra Norte region, and a masterpiece of 20th-century Mexican architecture
The Parish of Saint Mary of the Assumption is one of the most impressive temples in Puebla’s Sierra Norte region in Huauchinango, and a masterpiece of 20th-century Mexican architecture. Designed by architect Carlos Lazo Barreiro, it combines modernist design with deep spiritual symbolism. The building’s circular floor plan and enormous dome of 15.22 meters high and 27.16 meters in diameter, make it the third largest dome in Latin America. Supported by four massive concrete pillars, the structure conveys both strength and serenity. Inside, visitors are greeted by the image of the Virgin of the Assumption, surrounded by a mural depicting the local flora and fauna, a blend of faith, art, and nature. The church’s vast interior offers stunning acoustics and a peaceful atmosphere, making it a space for contemplation and devotion. Whether admired from afar or experienced within, the parish stands as a testament to Huauchinango’s faith and creativity.
