Tlaxcala Art Museum MAT
The Tlaxcala Art Museum (MAT) exhibits early works by Frida Kahlo in its permanent gallery
The Tlaxcala Art Museum (MAT), inaugurated in 2004 in a 19th-century building in the Historic Center, houses an exclusive permanent gallery with six early works by Frida Kahlo (two oil paintings, three watercolors, and a drawing from 1923-1927). Its five temporary exhibition galleries showcase modern, contemporary, and Latin American art, including paintings and sculptures from colonial Mexico from the Museo del Carmen, with rotating exhibitions such as "Frida in Tlaxcala" and "Manifestos of Mexican Art 1921-1958."
Located at Plaza de la Constitución 21, the museum retains its original layout as a former prison and hospital, and is equipped with high-tech lighting, security, and air conditioning. It includes a library, a documentation center for Tlaxcalan visual arts, a bookstore, and a gift shop. Guided tours and interpretive panels explain Frida's connection to Tlaxcala and the local artistic legacy.
