Training for Community Tourism Committed to the Environment
An initiative in Chiapas, in the Lacandon Jungle, that strengthens local capacities to provide responsible tourism services and protect biocultural heritage.
Cultural Sustainability
The initiative “Training for Community Tourism Committed to the Environment” has been active since 2025 in the state of Chiapas, reaching the Lacandon Jungle region, with a social and environmental focus.
It promotes the protection of the biocultural heritage of the Lacandon Jungle region, a highly sensitive ecosystem that is crucial for climate regulation and freshwater recharge, and which is home to key species such as the jaguar, scarlet macaw, harpy eagle, and the endemic flower Lacandonia schismatica.
The objective of this initiative is to strengthen capacities for quality service and the implementation of environmentally responsible practices, as well as to recognize service providers committed to both environmental protection and high-quality service. Through advisory support and training workshops in customer service, hiking, tourism geography, and first aid—incorporating content on responsible environmental practices—the initiative promotes responsible tourism and improved visitor attention. Participating service providers receive a special uniform featuring the state’s tourism branding, identifying them as trained and environmentally committed tourism providers.
Main impacts and results of this initiative:
• 65 individuals participated in hiking training courses.
• 3 communities received training.
