Cultural Sustainability

The initiative “Tourism Project in San Andrés Mixquic” has been active since February 2025 to date in Mexico City, in the borough of Tláhuac, specifically in San Andrés Mixquic, with a social focus.

Its objective is to diversify tourism demand in Mexico City. This project is aimed at strengthening local capacities, promoting social inclusion, and revitalizing the local economy through the development of a tourism model based on participation and the responsible use of biocultural resources.

Key actions include the co-creation of the project roadmap in collaboration with local residents and stakeholders, the training of tourism hosts, capacity-building in sustainable and nature-based tourism, as well as workshops related to traditional trades such as the construction and repair of canoes and trajineras. The destination was also incorporated into the social tourism program “Colibrí Viajero,” which offers free tours to vulnerable groups such as the elderly and children.

Main impacts and results of this initiative:

• 11 working sessions with the participation of 40 residents and local stakeholders.

• Design of a brand identity for the town of San Andrés Mixquic as a tourist destination.

• Capacity-building for 143 tourism service providers, community promoters, and youth.

• Design and implementation of the Tláhuac Tourism Route and the Day of the Dead Special Program.

• Collaboration in the organization of the Mixquic Vegetable Fair, with the participation of more than 100 producers from conservation land.

• Generation of at least 105 direct jobs, plus additional indirect employment.
