Tecate is a wonderful border town, and namesake of one of the most popular beers in Mexico. With just over 110,000 permanent residents, Tecate is a small city, and for lots of visitors, a first introduction to Mexico. Of all the 170+ Pueblos Mágicos in Mexico, this is really the only one right on the US border or any of the international borders of Mexico. The region is unique and reflects a variety of strong cultural influences.
Way more relaxed than anything to the north, Tecate is a great place for weekend retreats, or for an extended stay. The surrounding landscape is inspiring, from La Rumorosa to the Cerro del Cuchumá (technically on the USA side of the border).
Tecate is often a first stop on the Baja California Wine Route. The route extends southwest from here, and over the course of some 100+ kms, no fewer than 150 wineries are producing some of the best wines in the world. That traveler-friendly industry has invited a wealth of spas and ranch resorts for those seeking a really pampered trip into the country.
But it\'s also a great desert landscape for adventure and outdoor sports. With a full city to support the outdoors enthusiast, visitors take to mountain bikes, and even more adventurous equipment to get out there further.
The famous red clay in the region is the perfect way to serve the cuisine that inspires chefs from here to points much further north. Of course, the local diet is served with the famous Tecate beer. The brewery offers frequent tours for visitors, and still serves as the toast of the town.
People get to Tecate from the Tijuana airport. It\'s still a little closer than the airport in Mexicali. ABC Buses runs buses to both airports. It takes about 35 minutes from Tijuana, and a bit more than an hour from Mexicali. Of course, Tecate is also one of the best-known border crossings. Trips from the El Cajon Transit Center in the greater San Diego metro area will take just under an hour.
