Loreto

Loreto is a famous and deeply historical resort town on the coast of Baja California Sur. It\'s a popular spot for fishing and outdoor activities, but more than anything people just seem to come to stroll the beaches, the quaint and remarkable town, and to enjoy the perfect weather all year round.

As a retirement community, Loreto is remarkably international. A world-class golf scene is in business most of the year. The town caters to some rather high-end visitors with restaurants and the yacht marina, and the expensive hotels. But it is also popular with budget travelers who can spend much more time here than in their home countries.

The town is famous for the historic Our Lady of Loreto Mission, where the Christian evangelization of California began in 1683. The Museum of the Jesuit Missions covers that history in minute detail. But people come for the whale watching offshore on the Isla del Carmen. The entire area is remarkable and worth spending a good few days exploring.

Most famous for the charred clams, Loreto offers a tremendous culinary scene. Seafood and beef machaca served with

But Loreto might always be most famous for the waterfront. The city looks out over a calm and peaceful sea where whales make annual visits and people are moved to tears. More expensive hotels are surprisingly central, but there is a wide range that will please visitors from all over.

People get to Loreto via the Loreto Airport (LTO) with flights arriving Alaska, Avianca, and United. There are sometimes flights from other points in Mexico, especially Tijuana, and from LAX. Just as common are arrivals via the Los Cabos (San José del Cabo) airport. This requires a bus trip of about 7.5 hours via Todos Santos, another great little town in Baja California Sur.
