Grutas de Tolantongo

The Grutas de Tolantongo is one of the most famous and well-developed destinations for travelers in central Mexico. In the state of Hidalgo, the complex is about two hours drive north and east of Pachuca. And people come to get away from it all. The hydrothermic water seeps into caves connected by tunnels, everything emanate steam from between the rocks. The complex also boast several waterfalls along a river that's often up to to 38° C. There are breathtaking views, place to stay, and natural pools terraced onto the hillsides.

Tolantongo is also the name of the canyon and caves and the river itself. It's a remarkable spa, but also a natural getaway. There are spaces for camping, several hotels and a number of eateries. Guests come for a long weekend, or for full vacations, but Tolontongo is perhaps best known as a family friendly natural getaway, with lots of water, hiking trails through the surrounding forests, and the longest zip line in Hidalgo. At nearly two kilometers in length, even the most adventurous travelers come away impressed.

Caves here are heated by the geothermal waters, and swimming and just enjoying the heat are the rule of the day. It remains one of the most visited geothermal sites in the country.  The complex offers accommodation in several hotels, at camp sites, and at rented cabins. Most accommodation comes with entrance to the adjoining pools, caves and park areas. There are also package rates that can include transport from Ixmiquilpan. 

Most visitors will arrive from Ixmiquilpan or from Mexico City, Pachuca, or Querétaro, which is about three hours directly west. Fortunately, tour operators run weekly package trips to the Grutas, and many visitors will arrive that way. From Mexico City, driving time takes just shy of four hours.
