Aquismón

A prince among Huasteca mountain towns, Aquismón seems to always keep one foot in paradise, and a more lovely place would be very difficult to imagine.

Aquismón

Aquismón is most famous for the stunning waterfalls and related swimming and recreational areas in the surrounding mountains. The town itself is a Pueblo Magico, but people come to stay here, and spend much of their days exploring the jungles, cascades and remarkable natural areas as much as the town itself. The surrounding countryside is a paradise that produces coffee, oranges, lemons, and sugar cane. It\'s an importan Huastecan community, with most of the people claiming Teenek ancestry. But Nahua and Xi\'u communities also call the region home.

The most famous, and highest of the waterfalls is the Cascada de Tamul. It\'s about an hour northwest of the town center.  The Sótano de las Golondrinas, literally the Cave of the Swallows is is only for those serious about rapelling, but the cave is named for the thousands of birds who somehow call it home.

Rivers, waterfalls, and surrounding caverns are what make the Huasteca region world famous. The music is heartbreaking too. But closer to home, the town is a hotbed of great food and art. Don\'t miss dishes like zacahuil, bolim, Huastecan enchiladas, and tamales. The fruit raspas should finally convince you that you\'ve really come into somewhere special. .

The region is famous for the embroidery and similar country artisan works While there is a Livestock Fair every April, it\'s probably the Fiesta de los Negros Mascogos every August that stands out. It\'s often combined with the Fiesta de Santa Rosa de Lima on August 30 that closes each summer with religious dances and fireworks.

The Autonaves bus line runs regular buses to Tancanhuitz, the neighboring town about 10 minutes from Aquismón. Many visitors will combine a visit here with a trip to Xilitla, just about an hour to the south of Aquismón. But a best bet for arriving to Aquismón is through Ciudad Valles, itself a bigger Huastecan town. Just about an hour north of Aquismón, Valles gets regular buses from the capital of San Luis Potosi, and smaller buslines will get you the rest of the way to Aquismón. Ovnibus, Futura, and Transportes Frontera also run direct buses from the Mexico City Central del Norte station to Ciudad Valles.
