Villanueva

Remarkable, colorful and high in the southern mountains of Zacatecas, you get an unforgettable journey into the lively and always-thumping birthplace of tamborazo music.

Villanueva

Villanueva is a legendary little town in Zacatecas. It's possibly most famous for its proximity to the La Quemada archaeological site, but people come for the Hacienda La Encarnación and the El Salitre park with thermal waters and all kinds of family activities. The la Quemada site is about 15 minutes from the center of Villanueva, and a range of providers will be happy to take you.

Founded in 1692, it was originally called Villagutierre del Águila. Later the name was changed for San Judas Tadeo to Villa de San Judas Tadeo de Villa Gutierre del Águila although that was probably too long even back then. As it was the last town founded in the south of Zacatecas, the name that stuck was simply Villa Nueva meaning simply new town.

Today, the town center is a rustic few blocks of stone streets and curious shops to poke into. The center is famously crowded with artisans hawking everything from woven sarapes to wood carvings and even works in the same stone from which the town is built. The Sanctuary of San Judas Tadeo stands most prominently, but the side streets lead eventually to the giant municipal market. Highlights include chorizo sandwiches, condoches de frijoles, and all kinds of pumpkin and squash candies.

The town is remarkable as is any trip to get here. About one hour south of the Zacatecas airport, it's actually a little closer to the west side of the capital city. Omnibus runs regular buses to Villanueva, and these will generally cost around mx$100 for the roughly 45 minute trips. A range of services down to the very inexpensive are available from the Zacatecas capital region. From Aguascalientes, the trip through rugged Zacatecas can take up to four hours, so plan accordingly. Other than charter services, most bus lines will only take you as close as Huejúcar. But there are tour groups leaving all the time.
