Mineral del Chico

One of the most charming of Hidalgo mountain-top towns . . .

Mineral del Chico

Mineral del Chico is an enchanted little town high in the mountains to the north of Pachuca. Just about 45 mintues from there, it\'s less than two hours from the north of Mexico City. It\'s long been one of the most accessible ways of reaching the El Chico National Park, itself a dramatic and enticing moutain refuge.

People come to sip coffee and stroll the few narrow streets. But more active travelers will take off for hikes in the surrounding forests and valleys. A guide is generally recommended as some of the country is unforgiving as a few glimpses at the soaring cliff faces and spiraling peaks will surely show.

The town itself was long a center for the area\'s mining past. Even still, it\'s microscopic next to Pachuca. Today, it survives because many visitors come for the unique mountain atmosphere, and warm authentic feel to so many stones streets, hideaway cafes, and little lunch counters. It\'s a remarkable place to find oneself.

The Peña del Cuervo peak towers nearly 3,000 meters above sea level. But if you can get there, the panoramic views of the town are stunning. Locals will invite you for lamb barbecue, most mornings especially, but the famous pastes, originally intended for Cornish miners are a local mainstay. Tachuela is the local drink made from wild forest herbs and fruits. Served in a tequila shot glass, it usually comes with a Maria cookie. The ingredients are generally kept secret.
