Cerro de las Campanas

Located just a short distance from downtown Querétaro, the Cerro de las Campanas (Hill of the Bells) stands as one of the nation's most solemn and vital historical landmarks. This iconic hill owes its unique name to the native stones found across the terrain which, when struck together, emit a metallic ring closely resembling the chiming of a bell. The site went down in history in 1867 as the final execution grounds of Emperor Maximilian of Habsburg and conservative generals Miguel Miramón and Tomás Mejía, a watershed moment that solidified the Mexican Republic's sovereignty. Today, it thrives as a beautiful, leafy public park perfect for a peaceful walk, historical reflection, and taking in panoramic city views.
