Humedales de la Montaña La Kisst
One of the least-known and smallest of the truly important federally protected wildlife areas in San Cristóbal.
The Humedales de la Montaña La Kisst is a mountain wetlands flora and fauna protection areaand one of the most important in the state. Just a few minutes from the historic center of San Cristóbal de las Casas in Chiapas, it's a true natural treasure and very few travelers will find out about it. The ecological refuge, established just in 2024, protects some 215 hectares of rare high-altitude wetlands. Pine-oak forests meet grasslands and a few small freshwater lakes make it into a truly unforgettable landscape, even within the city.
Designated a RAMSAR Site, the wetlands are vitally important for water conservation and biodiversity in the region. Visitors marvel at the stillness of the water and go in for bird watching, nature photography, and peaceful walks beneath the cypress and centuries-old sabino pines.
Local fauna includes such emblematic species like the gray fox, mountain rabbits, giant fruit bats, and spectacular birds like the Mexican trogon, chichicuilotes, and blue-winged teal. The area is home to endemic and endangered species like the San Cristóbal salamander (Tlaloc hildebrandi) and the San Cristóbal shrew (Sorex stizodon), the conservation of which depends on these humid ecosystems.
The Humedales de la Montaña La Kisst refuge contrasts with the vibe in San Cristóbal nearly completely. You get a green alternative and a chance to reconnect with nature without having to travel too far. The refuge is within the city, roughly 10 minutes from the town center traveling southwest by taxi or car.
