Dzibilnocac

The extraordinary painted vaults and vocal stones that seem to cry back from the deepest recesses of a history we're only starting to learn again.

Dzibilnocac

The Dzibilnocac archaeological site is right on the eastern edge of the little town of Vicente Guerrero, which had been called Iturbide until 1964, in the distant east of Campeche. But importantly, the archaeological site is some 20 minutes drive northeast of the modern town of Dzibalchen. Tour groups regularly leave the modern town for the ancient site, but the little town of Vicente Guerrero (Iturbide) increasingly offers most services that visitors might want.

The archaeological site is named in the Mayan language as place where it is written on the sacred walls. This ancient writing is everywhere evident. The stones still seem to speak with a solemnity that permeates the entire area. The site is famously of the Río Bec architectural style, with decorative temples and towers to serve not as lookouts but as sacred symbols. The most important structure here preserves carved masks to representing deities and mythical beings. Details have withstood centuries of history, weather, and the silence of the surrounding jungle.

Although not as well known as Calakmul or Edzná, Dzibilnocac has an undeniable magnetism. Walk the plazas during the afternoon light, and you will connect with a serenity of a world unlike any other. Every narrow corridor and worn platform, reminds us that the Maya built not only with stone, but with a deliberate intention.

Visitors to the town can get tours of the site, although much of it remains un-excavated. There are a number of certified tour operators who will be happy to show you the

People get to Vicente Guerrero (Iturbide) from either Dzibalchen or from the municipal seat at Hopelchén, which is a slightly bigger town. Most bus service from the capital will route you through Hopelchén. It's a historic town with plenty to attract visitors too. Driving straight east from the Tren Maya station at Edzná takes a little more than an hour.
