Monterrey

Monterrey is the capital and biggest city in Nuevo León. It's also, pretty easily, the most important city in the north of the country and certainly in the northeast. Some 5.5 million people live in the metropolitan area with the city itself home to a respectable 1.2 million. Founded in 1596, it has long been an important center for industry and trade, but it has also, nearly always been recognized for the dramatic landscape, unique culture, and quality of life for residents and visitors alike. 

People have long visited for business and related reasons, but these people too find a city that is a boon to leisure travelers. Natural attractions are nearby, and often visible from right in the city, but there is also a strong cultural and artistic atmosphere that permeates the entire place. People flock to Bishop's Hill and the museum there. Views of the city are just an added bonus. The Macroplaza at the center of the city is flanked by gardens and museums, the City Theater, and the Central Library. The Old Quarter, the ​Casco Viejo is a popular area for strollers and the merely curious. Not far off, the Cathedral was begun in 1663, and finished only 1791.

But people come for the vibe, too. A vibrant nightlife is supported by the student and artistic communities. Although these are just as likely to be taking off for the many surrounding natural and national parks, mountains, and adventure areas. Santiago is practically a magical suburb, on the lake to the south and accessible by city buses. Some of the upper neighborhoods have warning signs to protect the local bear populations. This clues you in to just how close the people of Monterrey live with the natural environment. 

The Monterrey airport is also one of the most important in Mexico, and North America. It's ranked fourth for international arrivals, and those numbers swell for well attended events, festivals, and sporting events. Getting to Monterrey, even from Asia, is more possible than ever.
