Maxcanú

One of the most authentic Yucatan towns is far and distant on the Campeche border, a land of mysterious ruins, strident old haciendas, and a colorful vibe of food and ongoing celebration.

Maxcanú

Maxcanú is the last stop in Yucatan, traveling south from Mérida on the Tren Maya just before the Campeche border. The population, some 24,000 people speak mostly Mayan, although Spanish is widely understood. The town dates from at least the 2nd century CE, although it is likely that some human activity took place in the area before that.

Maxcanú is visited today because of the extensive archaeological sites across the region. But the town itseld was the site of a major henequen hacienda. Much of the most important colonial-era architecture in the town dates from that time.

The ancient site at Chunchucmil is nearby and it is likely the most famous and accessible from the town center. A bit further afield, the sites at Oxkintoc and Kupaloma give just an idea of the incredible age and history of the site.

If you get hungry, the central market, "Kúuchil koonol Maxcanú" is just north of the main town square. Cochinita pibil, salbutes, panuchos, and the beloved sopa de lima are everywhere on hand. Try the honey based sweets within the market too. The main town square is bordered by the municipal palace and the famous Church of San Miguel Arcángel.

It may be one of the most authentic Yucatan towns, in part because the main attractions for visitors are not in the town center. You can spend a few days here, enjoy the food and the local celebrations, but you will never tire of the pace of life, the laid back vibe, and the colorful excitement over things grands and more modest.

The town is an important stop on the Tren Maya, especially for those traveling east along the Muna - Maxcanú highway. Buses arrive from Mérida and Campeche in about 33 to 43 minutes respectively. Many bus lines have plied the same route for years from the same cities and may offer slightly more frequent service. On the Tren Maya, the trip from distant Palenque is a bit further, at about 6 hours, 45 minutes.
