Ángel Albino Corzo Main Square
Historical and Cultural Heart of Chiapa de Corzo
The Plaza de Armas of Chiapa de Corzo, named after the illustrious liberal and defender of freedom, Ángel Albino Corzo Castillejos, is a gem you can’t miss. With its impressive 17,000 m², this plaza is one of the largest and most important in all of Latin America—a vibrant space where history, culture, and tradition converge.
Around the plaza, the arcades form a lively commercial corridor bursting with color and life, where you can find the finest local crafts—perfect for taking home an authentic souvenir from Chiapas.
The soul of the plaza lies in its unique Mudejar ensemble, which includes the iconic Mudejar Fountain, also known as La Pila. Built in the 16th century, this brick masterpiece symbolizes the cultural fusion of Christian and Islamic styles and is the only one of its kind in all of Ibero-America. Admiring its arches and patterns is like traveling back in time to appreciate the rich history of the region.
Nearby stands the Clock Tower, constructed in the 1950s as an architectural tribute to La Pila, completing this singular Mudejar ensemble.
But the plaza holds even more natural and cultural treasures. Under the shade of La Pochota, a majestic thousand-year-old ceiba tree—sacred to the Maya and a silent witness to history—the indigenous town of Chiapa de Corzo was founded. This green giant is the living heart that connects past and present.
Additionally, the plaza honors two remarkable figures with monuments: one to General Ángel Albino Corzo, Chiapas’ hero and symbol of freedom, and another to Zeferino Nandayapa, the virtuoso marimba player and musical ambassador of Chiapas to the world.
Visiting the Plaza de Armas of Chiapa de Corzo is immersing yourself in a place where every stone, every corner, and every musical note tells the story of a people proud of their identity and traditions. Come and experience this unique journey!
