Day 1: A Day in Tepatitlán de Morelos: Discover the Pearl of Los Altos de Jalisco

Looking for a plan to escape your routine? Just over an hour’s drive from Guadalajara, you’ll find Tepatitlán de Morelos, a destination known for its local cuisine, colonial architecture, and the essence of Los Altos. Known as “The Pearl of Los Altos de Jalisco,” Tepatitlán—or “Tepa” as locals call it—is a place where mornings begin with a chocomil (one of the most typical drinks at the Municipal Market) and where every street tells a story.

One-Day Itinerary in Tepatitlán de Morelos
10:00 AM | Breakfast at Mercado Centenario
Start your morning with a culinary stroll through Mercado Centenario. Order a “chocomil de Tepa” (also known as esquimos elsewhere), served in a plastic bag and available in flavors like cajeta (caramel), vanilla, strawberry, or chocolate—perfect for a sweet start to your day.

Don’t miss the Tortas Meregildo (stand 47), made with ham, cream, and pickled carrots, and for dessert, try one with cajeta. On the market’s first floor, you can choose from menudo, tacos, gorditas, and seafood.

12:00 PM | Visit the Municipal Museum and the Sanctuary of the Lord of Mercy
Just steps from the market, you’ll find the Municipal Museum, housed in a neoclassical mansion built in 1904. Next to it, visit the Sanctuary of the Lord of Mercy, an iconic landmark of Tepatitlán. If possible, join a guided tour to learn about the murals that surround the temple and the stories they hold in each brushstroke.

2:00 PM | Discover Los Altos de Jalisco Tequila
Visiting Tepatitlán without experiencing the tequila of Los Altos is missing out on one of its greatest prides. About 20 minutes from Tepa, you’ll find Casa Trujillo, a distillery and adults-only hotel where you can enjoy a tequila tasting amid the red-soil landscapes and agave fields that characterize the region. We recommend booking in advance.

7:00 PM | Stay in the Heart of Tepa
If you decide to stay and enjoy the evening in Los Altos, the Hotel Grand Casa Naranjos is a charming boutique option located in the center of Tepatitlán. The hotel features nine rooms, each named after common local surnames, and decorated with antique details and furniture that transport you to a traditional Los Altos mansion.
