Papantla World Heritage Route
Papantla, the pride of northern Veracruz, is the only municipality in the state with three World Heritage Site designations granted by UNESCO, and one of the few cities in Mexico with more than one such designation. Here, the Totonac culture is still alive, rich in history, spirituality, and traditions passed down from generation to generation. In every corner, you can feel the essence of a people who honor their roots and proudly share their ancestral legacy.
Your two-day adventure begins with a welcome ceremony at the Kantiyán, the sacred altar where permission is sought from Mother Earth for a fulfilling and safe journey. Through this ancestral ritual, you’ll feel the spiritual connection that defines the Totonac worldview.
We’ll continue to the Center for Indigenous Arts (CAI), a site recognized by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, where Totonac masters will invite you to participate in traditional art workshops. You’ll have the opportunity to learn ancient techniques of embroidery, pottery, or woodcarving, creating your own handicrafts and gaining an appreciation for the value of preserving ancestral knowledge.
In the afternoon, we’ll head to El TajĂn, the ancient capital of the Totonac Empire. Accompanied by our guide, you’ll explore its terraces, plazas, and temples until you reach the majestic Pyramid of the Niches, a symbol of this civilization and one of Mexico’s most important archaeological treasures. This site, also recognized by UNESCO, will envelop you with its energy and mysterious beauty.
After enjoying a traditional regional breakfast, we’ll begin a tour of the Historic Center of Papantla, a “Pueblo Mágico” brimming with color, music, and traditional architecture. We’ll visit the Teodoro Cano Museum, where you’ll be able to admire the works of the celebrated Papantla artist who captured the life, customs, and landscapes of his homeland on canvas.
The journey continues with the experience of witnessing the Ritual Dance of the Flyers, the third UNESCO-recognized cultural heritage site. In front of the Parish Church of Our Lady of the Assumption, you’ll be able to witness this fascinating ritual that unites heaven and earth in an act of faith, balance, and respect for nature.
To top it all off, we’ll visit a local company dedicated to the artisanal production of vanilla, the pride of Papantla. Here you’ll sample unique products such as vanilla-infused liqueur, beer, and whiskey, as well as the traditional “beso totonaco,” a sweet symbol of the region.
