Day 1: Paradiso Route

Departing from Xalapa, we head toward Nace el Río, a natural gem that combines the splendor of the forest with crystal-clear turquoise waters. In this beautiful Environmental Management Unit (UMA), you can hike trails surrounded by lush vegetation, visit its orchid garden and butterfly garden, and enjoy a refreshing swim in the river. For those seeking a touch of adventure, the site offers the option of rafting on its calm currents. It also has all the necessary amenities: restrooms, changing rooms, a café, and a restaurant—perfect for relaxing after a morning spent in nature.

We continue on to Coyolillo, a charming Afro-descendant town founded by former slaves from the region’s sugarcane plantations, who, after gaining their freedom, proudly preserve their roots and traditions. This town is famous for its Carnival, considered one of the oldest and most colorful in Mexico, celebrated between February and March. If you take this route during those dates, you’ll have the opportunity to visit the home of a mask artisan, learn about the process of crafting the iconic masks, share a traditional meal, and—best of all—participate in the parade, dancing and celebrating alongside the community in an unforgettable cultural experience.

Finally, we return to Xalapa with our hearts full of joy, history, and nature, after having explored two places that represent the natural and cultural richness of the state of Veracruz.
