KUUL, the sacred wolf inviting the world to rediscover Mexico
With gray fur, multicolored mane, and Mayan spirit, KUUL is not only Visit Mexico's new mascot but also a symbol with a powerful mission: to show the world the country's most magical places and protect the memory of an endangered species.
KUUL, whose name means “sacred” in the Mayan language, represents the Mexican gray wolf, a species that was on the brink of extinction in the 1970s (there were only four wolves left!) and today survives with just 50 individuals in the wild. Formerly revered by indigenous cultures as the guardian of the night and a symbol of wisdom, the wolf was respected for its connection to nature and the divine.
Today, KUUL embodies that legacy. It travels through the wonders of Mexico with a clear message: to protect biodiversity and proudly welcome the millions of tourists who come each year to discover our cultural, natural, and historical wealth.
