Jalisco Beaches to Enjoy During Winter Vacation

Winter vacation is just around the corner, and if you're looking for a warm destination to disconnect, Jalisco is home to some of the most special beaches in Mexico. Puerto Vallarta is the classic must-visit —the most Mexican beach of them all— but there are also quieter, almost untouched spots with unique experiences worth discovering. Here’s a guide to help you choose the perfect beach based on your travel style. 1. Mayto Beach: Tranquility by the Sea If you love getting away from the noise, Mayto —in the Costalegre region— is that peaceful hideaway where the only soundtrack is the ocean. A wide, semi-virgin beach with a relaxed atmosphere that invites you to fully unplug. Recommended stay: Hotel Mayto Food: Fresh seafood by the beach Unique experience: Sea turtle sanctuary (seasonal) How to get there: From Puerto Vallarta, the drive takes about 2 hours along the Manzanillo–Puerto Vallarta highway (Mexico 200). 2. Boca de Iguanas: Nature and Nights Under the Stars Boca de Iguanas, also in Costalegre, is perfect for camping lovers. Here, ecological conservation is the priority, and between October and March, the beach comes alive with the arrival of sea turtles. Recommended camping area: Boca Beach Trailer Park & Camping Waves: Moderate (swim with caution) How to get there: Approximately 3 hours from Puerto Vallarta via the Manzanillo–Puerto Vallarta highway (Mexico 200). 3. Isla Cocinas: A Paradise of Crystal-Clear Waters Just off Punta PĂ©rula lies Isla Cocinas, a true Costalegre treasure. White sand, transparent water, and the feeling of being completely removed from the world. Access is only by boat, which makes it even more special. Access: Boat from Punta PĂ©rula (25 minutes). Local tours often include snorkeling. Recommendations: Bring water, food, shade, and sunscreen. There are no services, and it’s essential to leave no trash behind. How to get to Punta PĂ©rula: 145 km from Puerto Vallarta; approx. 3 hours along the Manzanillo–Puerto Vallarta highway. 4. Colomitos: Mexico’s Smallest and Most Charming Beach At just 30 meters long, Colomitos is a hidden gem tucked between the jungle and the Pacific. Its emerald water and intimate setting make it the perfect spot to spend the day. How to get there: ‱ Water taxi from Boca de TomatlĂĄn (5 minutes). ‱ A 2 km hike through the jungle and along the coast (30–40 min; good physical condition required). How to get to Boca de TomatlĂĄn: Approximately 25 km from Puerto Vallarta (1 hour). Tip: Bring everything you’ll need for the day; there are no services on the beach. 5. Yelapa: Beach, Waterfalls, and Absolute Peace Yelapa is one of the best-kept secrets of BahĂa de Banderas. A fishing village surrounded by jungle and sea, with a relaxed vibe that instantly wins you over. It’s perfect for travelers seeking nature, rest, and great food. Recommended stays: Santuario Yelapa, Miramar Yelapa, Los Naranjos Retreat, Frida Yelapa, Hotel Verana What to do: Snorkeling, diving, kayaking, hiking, and wellness retreats. A must-try? The famous Yelapa Pie. How to get there: Only by sea: water taxi from Los Muertos Pier in Puerto Vallarta. From virgin beaches to jungle-hidden paradises, Jalisco has options for every type of traveler. Ready to choose your next sun-and-sea destination?
