Recommendations to enjoy the host capital to the fullest
Mexico City will be one of the tournament’s main stages, offering visitors a vibrant mix of history, culture, and football passion.
The Plaza de la Constitución, better known throughout Mexico as El Zócalo, is the main square of Mexico City and is often considered the country’s central plaza. As such, it frequently hosts some of the city’s most important events, including festivals, fairs, concerts, parades, cultural celebrations, and public gatherings throughout the year.
The square stands on what was once the center of the ancient city of Tenochtitlan. When the Spanish conquered the city, they preserved the plaza as the political and religious center of both the capital and the country.
Its popular name comes from a project in the mid-19th century to build a monument commemorating Mexico’s Independence. Only the base, or “zócalo,” was completed, and over time people began referring to the entire plaza by that name. Throughout history, the Zócalo has been the setting for viceregal receptions, religious ceremonies, public executions during the colonial era, and many defining moments in Mexico’s history. Today, it is considered one of the world’s most important public squares, alongside Tiananmen Square in Beijing and Red Square in Moscow.
Visitors to Mexico City’s Zócalo can enjoy a wide variety of cultural, tourist, and recreational activities. It is an ideal place to admire the architecture of the surrounding landmarks, including the impressive Metropolitan Cathedral and the National Palace.
The square is also known for its vibrant atmosphere, often featuring traditional dancers, live performers, and local artists. Visitors can explore food stands and artisan markets offering traditional Mexican dishes and handcrafted souvenirs, making the Zócalo an essential stop for experiencing the culture and spirit of Mexico City.
