Eight most important dishes in Sonoran Cuisine
The influence of the ethnic groups in Sonora makes itself known throughout the menu.
Ures was founded in 1636 as a mission and gained city status in 1838. Known as the âAthens of Sonoraâ due to its cultural significance, Ures is also considered the âgatewayâ to the Sonora River Route, a popular tourist trail celebrated for its stunning waterfalls and scenic landscapes nestled between the mountains.
On June 26, 2023, Ures was officially incorporated into Mexicoâs Pueblos MĂĄgicos program, further highlighting its historical and cultural value. Among its top attractions are La Quinta de NĂĄpoles Hacienda, the San Miguel ArcĂĄngel Church, the House of General Ignacio Pesqueira, the Plaza de Armas, the Monuments of the Independence Centennial, the Regional Costumbrista Museum, the HuerfĂĄna Sierra, and the Labrador Hacienda.
Uresâ gastronomy is one of its greatest treasures, featuring delicious specialties such as carne asada, machaca burritos, quesadillas, wheat flour tortillas, cheese soup, and corn tamales. Sweet delights include fruit preserves, sugarcane treats, melcocha (traditional caramelized candy), palanquetas (peanut brittle), and the famous local drink, bacanora. You also canât miss the unique jamoncillos (milk-based sweets), which are distinct from those found in other regions of Mexico thanks to their special recipe.
Local craftsmanship in Ures stands out for its leatherwork and saddlery traditions.
Among the most notable celebrations are the Regional Festival honoring San Miguel ArcĂĄngel on September 29, the Sugarcane Festival in early November, the Caravana del Recuerdo, the Black and White Ball, and the Morelos Street Cultural Festival, both also celebrated in November.
