Bahía de Kino

Bahía de Kino is a town of some 7,000 people on the coast of the fantastic Sea of Cortez in Sonora. It's the kind of coastal desert town that inspires legions of hearty travelers to visit for extended periods over many years and even decades. The town, and the bay, are named for the 18th century Italian Jesuit, Eusebio Kino. He spent much of the beginning of that century proselytizing with the local people here, and on up into southern Arizona until his death in 1711.

The town survived as barely a settlement through most of the centuries thereafter, until the early 20th century when it was recognized as an attractive base for fishing off the coast. By the 1930s, area shark populations were providing Shark Liver Oil as a much needed dose of Vitamin A to those who would pay for it. Proceeds built the town into somewhere that much more process until finally in the late 20th century when the era of travel and leisure really laid in.

Today, Kino is more that an RV stop, with a number of upscale restaurants and spas catering to an ever more well-heeled clientele. It's an increasingly important eco-tourism site with access to the dunes and the desert inland, and lots of undersea and seaside attractions too. People come because they can stay a long while, and because Kino is modest, welcoming, and fantastically beautiful all year round. Just strolling the beaches is the experience of a lifetime.

The vast majority are going to arrive from the state capital at Hermosillo, just about 90 minutes to the east. The funny thing is, even at some 100 kms distance, it's technically the same municipality as the capital city and so it not served by big national or regional bus lines. Take heart. From Autobuses Mixtos Hermosillo station, (Av Aquiles Serdán 14, Centro) you can get a ticket or boarding card. The buses themselves tend to say "Costa" on the side.
